How long does a Canada eTA take?

Many Canada eTA applications receive an approval notification within minutes of submission. However, not all applications are processed immediately. IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) may flag certain applications for additional review, which can extend processing to 72 hours or, in some cases, longer. There is no way to guarantee a specific processing time — the decision rests entirely with IRCC.

Why some applications take longer

IRCC may apply additional review to your application for a number of reasons. If your application is under review, IRCC will not always explain why. You should wait and check your email for updates. Most reviews conclude in a decision within a few days, though IRCC do not publish statistics on outcomes.

When should I apply for a Canada eTA?

Apply as early as possible — ideally at the same time you book your flights. While most applications are processed quickly, some take longer. Airlines check for a valid eTA before allowing you to board, and if your application is still being reviewed on departure day, you may not be allowed to fly.

Recommended: Apply at least two weeks before your departure date, and ideally a month in advance. Do not wait until the day before your flight.

What happens when my eTA is approved?

When IRCC approves your eTA, you will receive an email notification. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport — you do not receive a physical document. You should save the approval email for your records and show it to airline staff if asked. At the Canadian border, CBSA officers can verify your eTA electronically, so there is nothing additional to print or carry.

Your eTA is linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport after applying, you will need to apply for a new eTA before travelling.

What if I am still waiting after 72 hours?

If you have not received a decision after 72 hours, first check your spam folder. If there is still no update, you can contact IRCC directly or check your application status at the official IRCC website. If you applied through our service, contact us at support@canadaetaservice.co.uk and we will help you check the status.

You can check your eTA status directly on the official IRCC website.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make my eTA be processed faster?

No. Processing is entirely within IRCC's control. No service — including ours — can speed up a government decision. What we can do is ensure your application is complete and correct before submission, which helps avoid delays caused by errors.

What if my flight is tomorrow and I have not received my eTA?

Contact IRCC immediately using their official contact channels. This situation is stressful and may result in missing your flight. The best way to avoid it is to apply well in advance — at least two weeks before you travel.

Do I need to do anything after applying?

Just wait for the email confirmation. Check your spam folder if you don't see it. Once approved, your eTA is active and no further action is needed — just travel with the passport your eTA is linked to.
